Workshop tips: measuring

Am I qualified to provide workshop tips?
-No

 Still, consider these:

  • Phone Microscope- I am often faced with rulers, tapes or any measuring device with tiny graduations. Use your phone as a magnifying glass. Turn on the camera, keep the lens a couple inches away (so that it can focus) and zoom as needed.
    • The first picture is my drill press levelling guide. Virtually imperceptible.
    • The second is also my drill press levelling guide. Much better.

  •  Be the square man- So, have you ever meticulously checked all angles of a project just to finish and find it off? One problem could be your square!
    • Check your square. Remember Pythagoras? you know, the Pythagorean theorem? You might vaguely remember between daydreams of Pogs,  and 'Fly's up.'
    • Look it up, use it and check those squares!

  • Its just a millimeter- Learn to use a board stretcher. As in, don't cut off boards too short.
    • Experience with wood in different utilities can teach you something mastery with one doesn't. *Variable tolerances*
    • Your drawer dovetails and wall studs have different levels of precision needed. Plan accordingly.
    • Oh, and about this picture. check your rulers.
